Kudankulam plant reaches milestone
The second reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) accomplished criticality at 8.56 p.m. on Sunday.
The second reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) accomplished criticality at 8.56 p.m. on Sunday.
The occasion was welcomed with deafening adulation from the representatives, technocrats and individuals from the Russian pro gathering, trade of welcome and warm embraces.
As the heavy hitters of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited including its Chairman and Managing Director S.K. Sharma saw the turning point occasion from the control room, the atomic splitting began in the second reactor at the planned time.
On starting the First Approach to Criticality (FAC) at 7.52 p.m. on Friday by pulling back the control bars from the reactor, boron weakening began four hours after the fact to permit neutron fixation to go up, which in the end prompted the criticality of the reactor.
Once the reactor begins creating 400 MWe of force, potentially inside 45 days from the date of criticality, it is liable to be associated with the matrix. Era of force will be raised to 500 MWe, 750 MWe, 900 MWe and 1,000 MWe in stages. At each stage, different tests will be led and the specialized parameters checked as commanded by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). Taking into account the aftereffects of the tests at every stage and with AERB clearances, which will take a few weeks, resulting stages will be come to take the VVER reactor built with Russian specialized help to its greatest limit of 1,000 MWe.
Stacking of 163 enhanced uranium fuel congregations into the light water coolant reactor started on May 11 and was finished on May 19.
The KKNPP presented its reports to the AERB and got approval for criticality after the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change specialists, reviewed the second unit and presented their report to the Supreme Court.
Despite the fact that it was initially wanted to finish the development of the initial two reactors inside 60 months from the 'primary pouring of cement' on March 31, 2002, it took 11 years for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, the defender of the venture, to take the main reactor to the criticality stage, inferable from different reasons incorporating delay in supply of compo
The main unit, subsequent to achieving criticality in July 13, 2013 was synchronized with the southern framework in October that year. It has created 5,777 million units of force till May 2016. Tamil Nadu is getting its offer of 562.50 MWe from the main unit and neighboring Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are getting 50 MWe, 221 MWe and 133 MWe separately from the primary reactor while the Union Territory of Puducherry's offer stands at 33.50 MWe.
Tamil Nadu is relied upon to get at least 462.50 MWe from the second unit.
Having effectively achieved the mission by operationalising the initial two reactors, the KKNPP will now give careful consideration for initiating the work on the development of the third and fourth reactors, each with a limit of 1,000 MWe, at an expense of Rs. 39,500 crore.
