Season of death for Kerala’s captive jumbos

Some of Kerala's hostage elephants are not left to lick their injuries after the torment they experienced amid the now-finished up sanctuary celebration season in the State. Eleven of them kicked the bucket in the previous six months, nine of them subjected to ruthless torment, activists say.
Amid the incline season now, poor nourishment and sheer disregard have pushed the elephants into hopelessness, they include.
The Director of Project Elephant sent a grumbling by the Thrissur-based Heritage Animal Task Force and creature welfare activists to the Chief Wildlife Warden of the State on June 12, a day after the remainder of the passings. Venture Elephant, which capacities under the Union Environment and Forests Ministry, has looked for a report, which is yet to emerge. The activists say that after the celebration season, the creatures are left to battle for themselves.
"None of the dead elephants had substantial possession testaments. Every one of them were compelled to remain in the open without legitimate safe house at the season of their passing. Extreme torment, unscientific determination and treatment for their sicknesses and an absence of consideration and sustenance had prompted the passing of these elephants," says V.K. Venkitachalam, secretary, Heritage Animal Task Force.
Refering to the demise of an elephant close here on June 10, Mr. Venkitachalam claims that the creature was paraded amid celebrations with wounds everywhere throughout the body.
"Huge numbers of these elephants are kept at unapproved elephant-care focuses, oversaw by indicated veterinarians who don't have any degree issued by a real foundation. A hefty portion of these focuses don't don even a name board, or show points of interest of authentications issued by the State government or the Union Ministry," the team says.
The activists claim that mahouts harm the elephants frequently. Large portions of the mahouts still wield the banned ankus, a drive, they say.
Parading visually impaired and harmed elephants for celebrations, infringing upon Forest Department rules, is normal in the State.
